Benefit of Debate by Matt Contreras
学习辩论的益处
Confidence and presentation skills. Debate gives students confidence and presentation skills that are useful in all walks of life. Students learn how to calmly
engage large audiences as well as professionally confront argumentative foes.
Research. Students must read and understand academic research. Sources for evidence include public policy journals, think tanks, academic journals published by universities, as well as regular reading from NY Times, the BBC, and NPR.
Competitive academic motivation. Through debate students create a connection between research and payoffs in the form of trophies. This connection is more tangible than delayed or abstract motivations like a high SAT score-debate recognizes and awards academic excellence on a monthly basis.
Business skills. The skills and experiences a student gains through debate is essential for success in the business environment. The ability to think strategically, take on varying perspectives and persuade prepares students for leadership positions in the real world.
Speed Reading. One of the first things students learn at LNU is how to speed read (or spread) out loud. This increases a student’s
comprehension, confidence, and reading speed.
College admissions. Many schools will “silver bullet” competitive debaters, giving them preferential admittance and even scholarships (if they are interested in college debate).
