亚裔社团联诉哈佛美西新闻发布会5月15日在尔湾举行

橙县华人协会/华人家长会是最早参加联属申诉的机构之一，之后一直积极帮助宣传并联络其他亚裔机构参加联盟行动。在这次新闻发布会前，协会积极协助联络场地及宣传工作。当天尔湾分场的新闻发布会由家长会会长Sarah Yang主持，许秋红代表家长会发言。家长会希望家长们能积极支持这次申诉行动，因为这不仅关系到我们的孩子，这关系到社会的公平和美国的未来。

I
am an ordinary Asian mom. Like many Asian friends of mine, we were not born
here. We came here from different countries, from China, from India, from
Korea, and many other places of the world. But we have one common belief----we
believe in American dream, "life
should be better and richer for everyone, with opportunity for each according
to ability or achievement" regardless of
social class or circumstances of birth.
This is the
fundamental philosophy that makes
America become a great and prosperous
country.
Asian families have the tradition of valuing the importance of education and hard work. We believe through hard work, one can improve himself and get more opportunity. This is what we believe and how we teach our children. This is consistent with the American dream.
I am a member of Chinese-American Association of Orange County. Our organization focuses on education, and I know many parents and students. We are glad to see that many Asian students not only study hard, but also take a very active part in the community service and many other activities. Through these activities, they are showing the consistency, talents, leadership, and the passion to serve the people and contribute to the society. Unfortunately we also see many Asian students, even though they had made great achievements, they were rejected by the colleges they applied for. This not only broke their college dream, but also broke their belief of equality and hard work.
Thanks to all the organizations and friends who support the Harvard complaint. We stand here today, not only for our young generation can have the equal opportunity to go to the college, we stand here today to protect the American dream, the foundation of the on-going development of our country.

64家亚裔机构联诉哈佛大学 主流媒体纷纷报道

2015年5月15日，星期五，对于美国亚裔来说，是一个值得记忆的日子。5月15日上午10点，金橙俱乐部（TOC）协同前来支持的华裔、印度裔组织的代表在尔湾大学小区中心举行新闻发布会，申诉哈佛招生歧视。与此同时，在首都华盛顿的国家新闻中心也正在举行同样的记者会，这是一次美国东西联合行动，主场在美东的华盛顿，分场在美西的尔湾，亚裔以64个组织联盟的名义，向司法部及教育部下属负责民权事务的部门递交行政申诉，要求他们调查哈佛大学录取政策涉嫌歧视亚裔学生。
经过申诉组织委员会成员和志愿者们数月来的无私奉献和努力，组委会在5月15日凌晨以电子邮件的方式，向美国司法部人权司和教育部人权办公室正式上交申诉书。15日下午东部时间1:00-2:30，申诉代表团全体成员在国家新闻中心成功举办新闻发布会，吸引大批主流英文媒体和中文媒体到场，联邦众议员Rohrabacher亲自到场并发表支持讲话。现场观众们说，代表团成员胸有成竹，有备而来，面对主流媒体的挑战，陈述有理，反驳有据，令人信服。几个小时后，十多个英文媒体纷纷报道，几乎囊括了所有主要新闻媒体。
与此同时，在尔湾，西区分会场的新闻发布会与东区主会场遥相呼应。金橙俱乐部主席陈郁介绍说，过去20年，在全美亚裔学生增加了近一倍，学生综合素质大幅提高的情况下，哈佛大学及其它东部藤校对亚裔学生的录取率仍然停留在14％－18％ （包括来自亚洲的国际学生）甚至更低的比率。亚裔学生在任何一个SAT分数段的录取比率都是最低，在同样分数情况下，录取比率比白人低67％，比其他族裔更低。
类似情形也发生在耶鲁等其他长春藤名校。这些名校使用叫做整体性评价方式审核入学申请，倾向于将亚裔学生归类，认为他们缺乏创造力、冒险精神及领导能力，这种歧视已严重违反1964年民权法案第六章及美国宪法第14修正案，成为今天在美亚裔面临的最主要的民权问题。
陈郁指出，该项行动并非只是事关亚太裔权益，更与美国前途有关。基于美国法律，不论移民族裔背景，一律提供平等机会及保护。我们支持不分种族，而是以家庭背景、经济条件为依据的平等教育权利，照顾真正需要帮助的各族裔的低收入家庭子女享受平等的教育资源，做到真正意义上民主国家的机会均等，公平竞争。事实上公平录取最终将使所有族裔的学生受益，我们应该鼓励、帮助教育相对弱势的族裔追求上进，所谓“授人以鱼不如授人以渔”，但绝不能以牺牲其它族裔的平等权利，甚至以民主社会的倒退

纵观这次申诉活动，已不再是美国华裔在孤军作战。有64个华裔、印度裔、韩裔和巴基斯坦裔社团组织参加的联盟联属了这次申诉，这是美国20多年来亚裔在追求平等教育权益方面最大的一次联合行动。尔湾新闻发布会上，印度裔社团负责人在演讲中表示，对于此次申诉的发起人赵宇空先生、李春燕教授以及金橙俱乐部几个月来的积极联络、沟通协调非常赞赏，这次行动对于亚裔社区来说是非常重要的大事，他们会坚定支持，并希望亚裔们团结起来，共同努力消除美国社会的种族歧视！
这一努力已开始得到美国社会政要的关注和支持。 5月14日，三位代表团成员先期抵达华盛顿，就受到联邦众议员Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA)的接见。Rohrabacher议员表达了强烈支持的意愿，并责成助手帮助联络其他议员争取他们的帮助；5月15日上午，华裔联邦众议员Grace Meng (D-NY)和联邦众议员、国会高等教育委员会主席Virginia Foxx (R-NC)先后在办公室接见哈佛申诉代表团全体成员。在西区尔湾会场，加州参议员夏乐柏、韩裔州众议员金映玉及华裔州众议员张玲龄、州众议员Don Wagner的亚裔代表Samuel Han、州众议员David Hadley的代表Dave Louden、尔湾市长Steve Choi的代表Deborah Lin都到会表示对申诉的支持。
亚裔群体的这一努力也得到了美国众多主流媒体的重视。几乎在新闻发布会结束的6个小时内，就有11家主流媒体对这件事进行了详细的报道，其中包括彭博商业周刊，Fox News，NBC News，华尔街日报，西雅图时报，波士顿环球报等。在接下来的两天中，几乎美国所有的主流媒体都报道了这件事，《纽约时报》、《华尔街日报》、《华盛顿邮报》等均将此消息给予显著篇幅进行报道， NPR 洛杉矶电台的Larry Mantle访谈对TOC主席陈郁进行了实时访谈，微软全国广播公司（MSNBC）也采访了此次申诉的发起人赵宇空先生和李春燕教授。主流媒体的重视程度是前所未有的,截止发稿时间，全美影响非常大的美国国家公共电台继续在节目中讨论此事，并采访申诉团队义工Swan Lee.
亚裔是美国少数族裔中的少数，在过去，亚裔很多次的维权努力都被主流政治体系所忽略，亚裔的声音往往被主流媒体的声音所淹没。这一次是却截然不同。这说明美国亚裔群体多年来的维权努力开始开花结果。在此我们引用TOC主席陈郁的话：“这仅仅是开始。”
