PLAY (Promoting Leadership in Aspiring Youth) is an organization that emphasizes high standards of leadership, public speaking, and political/social engagement in youth. PLAY seeks to introduce young adults of all ages and backgrounds to the public affairs and help raise community awareness of issues in governments of local, state, and Federal.
PLAY is now launching its first year essay contest with remarkable opportunities for young people interested in social issues and public affairs.
THEME:
This year's contest topic focused on California's economic, social, and political issues with series awards for winning entry. This essay requires that you research the California's social, economic and political issues and call for the action of our leaders. Please discuss one of the following topics listed below and write a letter addressing to California Governor, Jerry Brown. You are to identify the issues and outline the impact, propose a solution to Governor and urgent leaders to take actions.
- K to 12 education reform
- High Speed Bullet Train Plan
- Ban on BART Strike
- Pension reform
- California Drought
- Job Creation
- Undocumented Students
- Any other issues that you may be concerned
GUIDELINES:
1. Essays may be submitted by anyone who is attending Grades 6 to 12 (as of June 2014) in one of the following age categories:
i). Middle School (6th grade to 8th grade)
ii). High School (9th grade to 12th grade)
2. Essays must be 350 to 600 words in English typed or printed.
3. Essays must have a cover page indicating*:
(a) Age category,
(b) Essay title,
(c) Name,
(d) Address,
(e) Phone number
(f) Email
(g) Grade as of June 15, 2014
(h) Gender
(i) School name (if applicable)
(j) Word count.
* Entries missing any of the above information will not be considered.
4. Essays must be original and unpublished. Essays will be judged by judge pannel.
5. Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.
6. Copyright of the essays entered will be assigned to the organizers.
DEADLINE: Entries must be received by Aug 20, 2014.
AWARD:
All participates will be invited to PLAY's annual dinner gala (Resturant TBD). The top winners and all participates will be receiving award during the PLAY's annual dinner gala that will be held early of September. The gala will invite community leaders, political leaders, or business leaders to present the award to top winners while all participates will receive a certificate.
The following awards will be given in the Middle School category and High School category respectively:
Gold Prize: Certificate and Prize
Silver Prize: Certificate and Prize
Honorable Mention: Certificate and gift
