From Heart to Heart: Angel Heart International holds benefit concert
Angel Heart International held their second annual benefit concert on Saturday, January 23rd at Pacific Academy.
Aiming to allocate funds for Angel Heart International, the concert, hosted by Pacific Academy and co-hosted by Angel Heart Intl. and Opus119, featured four piano performers, Allison To, Juliana Wang, Phoebe Pan and Umi Garrett. Pacific Academy owner Kelly Chu emceed the concert. Founder Shouvan Li spoke at the concert about his inspiration to found Angel Hearts Intl. and experiences with the organization.
“The concert was rather amazing and the whole evening was touching, “Pacific Academy principal Keith Corpus said. “[It is] wonderful that [the performers] are able to play so well that it does not feel like high school kids.”
Angel Heart Intl. is a non-profit organization found in 2007 in California that sponsors heart surgery for impoverished kids in developing nations. It also organizes the Gansu Support Group Program in which volunteers travel to Lanzhou, China and build relationships with sponsored patients and their families.
“I decided to perform because it was for a very good cause,” performer and Pacific Academy sophomore Umi Garrett said. “It is a great way to do what I can, and piano is the one thing I can do.”
Founder and biomedical engineer Shouvan Li’s inspiration of founding Angel Hearts Intl came from an unfortunate incident in his own life—his daughter was born in 2002 with heart disease. As he read a story about a man named Mr. Zhang sponsoring the surgery of a child with Ventricular Septal Defect in China, he decided to found Angel Hearts Intl to help the unfortunate people in the world.
“I would use all the success in my career to trade for [my daughter’s] health and well-being, “Li said. “Her disease changed, little by little, my opinion of career success.”
On average, a child needs $4000 to undergo heart surgery. The organization has helped 102 kids, mainly in Gansu, China, get surgery for their heart diseases.
具体信息请参看angelheartintl.org.
